Editing a short story collection differs from editing a novel. Each story is complete; the collection creates meaning through arrangement and echo. The editor's job involves both: making each piece stronger while preserving what connects them.
A debut author submitted twelve stories written over seven years. Voice had shifted. Some pieces had been workshopped extensively; others were raw. The collection needed to feel unified without flattening what made each story distinct.
We provided detailed feedback on each story separately, then a structural note on the collection. Where did readers need a breath? Which story should follow which? When did resonance become repetition? The author made final decisions, but with a map of the terrain.
The collection was sold to a respected independent press. The editor there noted how clean the manuscript arrived. Unusual for a debut. The author had done the work; we'd helped clarify what the work required.
